What's Coaching About?

Jerry Anathan, business coach to yoga as well as fitness professionals, shares some information about personal and professional coaching.

How is coaching distinct from some other service careers?

Professional coaching focuses on setting goals, creating results and managing personal improvement. Sometimes it is beneficial to understand coaching by distinguishing it from other personal or business support jobs.

Therapy: Therapy relates to treating discomfort, dysfunction as well as conflict within an individual or in human relationships. The focus is frequently on resolving issues arising from prior times. Coaching, in contrast, helps personal and professional development based on self-initiated change in search for particular actionable outcomes. These results are connected to personal or professional results. Coaching is focused on future. Although positive feelings/emotions might be a natural result of coaching, the key focus is on creating actionable methods for reaching particular goals in a person's work or private life. The focus in a coaching relationship are on action, accountability, and follow through.

Consulting: People or organizations retain consultants for their experience. Although consulting techniques vary widely, the assumption is the advisor will identify issues and prescribe and, at times, implement solutions. With training, the assumption is that people or groups are capable of producing their own solutions, with the coach supplying supportive, discovery-based approaches and frameworks.

Mentoring: A mentor is an authority who offers knowledge and guidance depending on their own experience. Mentoring may include advising, counseling and training.

Training: Training applications depend on goals set out by the coach or instructor. Though goals are clarified in the coaching process, they are fixed by the person or team being trained, with advice provided by the trainer. Training also presumes a linear learning path which coincides with an established curriculum. Coaching is significantly less linear without a fixed curriculum.

Athletic Development: Although sports metaphors are typically used, professional coaching is different from sports training. The athletic trainer is frequently seen as an expert who guides and redirects the habits of individuals or groups based on their greater knowledge and experience. Specialist instructors possess most of these qualities, however their knowledge and experience of the person or team decides the direction. Furthermore, specialist training, unlike athletic development, does not concentrate on behaviors that are being executed badly or incorrectly. Instead, the main focus is on identifying possibility of improvement based on individual strengths and abilities.

What are some standard reasons somebody might work with a coach?

An individual or group could choose to employ a trainer for a lot of reasons, including although not limited to the following:

Something important, compelling or fascinating is at stake (a challenge, stretch goal or opportunity)
A gap is present in knowledge, abilities, self-confidence or assets
A wish to speed up final results
A lack of clearness with selections to be made
Success has begun to get problematic
Work and life are out of balance, generating undesired effects
Core strengths have to be identified, along with the best way to control them

Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell someone!
